UTSA celebrated its 25th birthday with a Silver Anniversary Convocation, much like a commencement ceremony except that no one graduates. A second convocation occurred in 1999, inaugurating Dr. Ricardo Romo as UTSA's fifth president. Starting in 2002, an annual fall convocation has occurred in the days before classes start, with addresses by the UTSA president, UTSA provost, and student body president.[1]

It was at the first convocation, the Silver Anniversary Convocation, that the university was given the president's medallion and university mace.[2]
